The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Occidental (OXY) will host a community event scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at Hawthorn Park in Okmulgee. Attendees will learn about the upcoming planned cleanup action at the former Kist Peanut Site and the anticipated community impacts and will be able to speak one-on-one with project team members.
The former Kist Peanut Site, once an oil refinery, is located just east of Muskogee Street and south of Box Avenue. The site is owned by the City of Okmulgee and is part of a Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP) initiative between DEQ and OXY, which is responsible for the remediation. This cooperative agreement to address impacts at the site began in 2010 with investigations to determine areas requiring cleanup.
